Belonging, Mobility and Everyday Urban Futures

Bringing together Dr. Wangui Kimari and Dr. Caroline Wanjiku Kihato, the panel explores how African cities are shaped through everyday life, from informal infrastructures and community organising to migration, displacement, and the politics of making home. Their work challenges conventional understandings of urban planning by foregrounding the knowledge, agency, and lived experiences of those whose labour, mobility, and social worlds sustain the city, often despite exclusion and structural inequality.

Situated within The Great Repair: umunyu, the discussion extends the exhibition's inquiry into repair to an ongoing practice of justice, belonging, and coexistence while considering how cities are made and remade through acts of collective imagination. Through questions of citizenship, memory, spatial justice, environmental care, and collective futures, the panel invites audiences to reflect on how more equitable urban worlds are enacted through everyday practices as we go on living together.
